Soybean production in Russia increased by 50% over 2006-2010 showing an annual growth rate of 10.9%. According to estimates by AS MARKETING, soybean production will rise by some 29% year on year in 2011.

Annual soybean imports surged from almost zero to over 1m metric tons over 4 years (2006-2010). To a large degree, the surge stems from the setup of a soybean processing facility in Kaliningrad (Sodruzhestvo-Soya CJSC); it is the largest soybean meal and soybean oil manufacturer in Russia. Mainly, soybeans are imported from the Latin America, namely from Paraguay and Brazil. Thus, imports from Paraguay accounted for 46% of the total in 2010; 39.5% came from Brazil.

In 2010, volume of Russia's soybean meal production showed a 10.1% year-on-year rise and increased six-fold compared to 2009.

Soybean meal imports shrank by almost 40% over 2006-2010; the trend stems from the rise in domestic soybean processing and soybean meal production. Exports also show constant negative dynamics ahead of rising internal demand for these products.

State regulation of the soybean market (introduction of high export duties) and long distances between key processing and key cropping areas appear to obstacle considerably the rise of soy production in Russia.

RESEARCH TASKS

  1. To provide an overview of the global and Russian markets of soybeans and derived products
  2. To analyze the structure of the global and Russian imports/exports of soybeans and soybean meal with a country breakdown
  3. To study the dynamics of soybean and soybean meal imports/exports, and of average contract prices
  4. To evaluate capacities of the global and Russian soybean and soybean meal markets
RESEARCH PROFILE
The report overviews the global and Russian soybean and soybean meal markets and covers the period between 2007 and 2011 (1st HY).
Chapter 1 provides a general overview of the global soybean market, its country breakdown, dynamics of global soybean production.
Chapter 1 provides an overview of the global soybean meal which is the by-product of soybean oil extraction. The report contains estimates of the global soybean meal demand, defines key consuming industries for this type of product.
Chapter 3 covers the Russian soybean market. Volumes of production by domestic companies are estimated, as well as imports; factors impacting the demand for this product in Russia are covered.
Chapter 4 defines key Russian soybean meal manufacturers, covers logistics factors obstacling the rise in soybean meal production in Russia, provides forecasts for the nearest future.
